Oregon----1980-1993

 

1980

When the St. Louis summer got exceptionally hot, I said it's time to head to Oregon!  So we did!

This was probably the trip when Grandma and Grandpa got to meet Tim in person.

Yep---I was very pregnant---a big reason why I wanted to get away from the heat.  It was August and my due date was 9/11, but I figure they have hospitals in Oregon, too.

This was the year that Mt. St. Helen's erupted.  So I was excited to see what I could of it from a distance.

 1981

didn't go here often, but this was in the Portland zoo.  Somewhat lacking in comparison to the St. Louis Zoo.

Mom didn't get to go many places, but we managed to get Grandpa to take her to the rhodie garden.

we also loved spending a couple days on the beach.    Angie loved the sand.

I've always had a desire to learn photography.  So this year while we were in Oregon, I bought my first slr --- a Canon AE1.  Over the years, I bought thousands of dollars worth of equipment from Mike at Focal Point.  Loved his camera shop right there in Dallas, Oregon.  He would always give me a deal, and Oregon doesn't have sales tax!

1983

Always had bar b qs and family get togethers in Mom and Dad's back yard.  Grandpa even put a tent up for the kids to play in---and him.

our trip to the coast for a mini vacation during our vacation.  Usually spent 2 nights on the coast to give Grandma and Grandpa a break, as well as to do some sightseeing.

We only went this for S a couple times.   Interesting place---sea lion caves.

Loved riding Dolly the Trolley in Lincoln City.  Unfortunately it quit running a couple years after we found it.

on to the Central Oregon coast.  We'd always spend a couple night there during our 10-14 day trip to oregon.  As I grow older, I bet Mom and Dad enjoyed these little peaceful breaks from us!

Pre-timeshare days for us.  We'd usually find a 1 bedroom place on the coast---or a studio.

The kids were never shy around Mom even though she was "different"---a quadriplegic since I was 12.

1988

and checking out the scenic coast between Lincoln City and Newport.

we weren't there for 4th of July often, but when we were, we'd head to the coast with David and family.

1992

Another fantastic summer vacation to oregon!

Spent our usual couple nights on the Oregon coast in Lincoln city.

Thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful weather and gorgeous Pacific ocean!

He never really retired!  When he was done working at McDonald Douglas, he was full time caregiver for MOM---something I've really learned to appreciate more once I became caregiver for Ken.

Another thing we only did once---ride the sky lift at Mt. Hood. 

Not much snow there this year, but enough for one or 2 runs to be open.

But mostly people just liked riding the lift in the summer.

They even have a sled ride that goes quite a distance.  The kids had a blast.

Later in the year when I went out to help decorate for xmas.  Even the weather cooperated for xmas decor.

1993

Another years has gone by.  Time to get out to Oregon again!

 

This time we did get to putt putt on the coast again.

the ocean has dug it's way inland in several spots.

We didn't often go much farther south then Newport Bay.  But occassionally we did go farther.  This year we made it to Honeyman Park near Florence.

Many amenities are available, including over 200 campsites, all-terrain vehicle access, swimming, fishing and sandboarding.  And as seen here---paddle boat rentals.

There are two miles of sand dunes between the park and the ocean. Two natural freshwater lakes are within the park. Cleawox -- which is great for swimming -- and Woahink, which has a public boat ramp, is used for all water sports.

The park is located within a 47-mile stretch of dunes from Florence to Coos Bay.

This popular day-use area on the north side of the lake includes several picnic tables with lake views and multiple places along shore to cast your line. A flat, sandy beach beckons sunbathing, sandcastles and splashing in the shallow swim area

On to Eastern Oregon (or Central, as I would call it).  Lots of lakes and rivers and waterfalls --- and lava beds!  We didn't go to the lava cave often (maybe just once), but the lava beds up by Clear Lake are pretty impressive, too.

Descend 55 stairs and then you are off on a self-guided tour of the tube, which takes around 90 minutes and is 2.2 miles roundtrip. Lava River Caves was one of the first lava tubes to be discovered in Oregon and is the longest one in the state.

Our base for our vacations---Mom and Dad's house in Dallas.

For about a year, Dad's Mom even lived in Dallas.  A New Jersey resident at heart, Uncle Joe (also in Dallas) and Dad moved Grandma to Dallas when she got too old to be by herself.  Dad got her into an assisted living home near him and would take her lunch/dinner every day and check on her.  By this time, she wasn't seeing very well so I don't think she really cared where she was.  Hopefully she enjoyed being near her 2 sons.  When she died, Dad had her sent back to New Jersey to be buried by Grandpa (whom I never met)

We half talked about buying a place out there as a vacation home.  But I think Ken got scared off that the kids and I would want to stay there

We were usually there in June (and celebrated Mom and DAd's anniversary with them) or August and celebrated Dad's birthday with them.  This year it was Dad's birthday---and his favorite cake, pineapple upside down cake.
